Google introduces Indian language support across products

Google Now Translates Local Reviews In Your Language

Google says the new automatic translations will be available in Google products, Search and Maps, and will offer most users both the translated review along with the original review in the native language.

Google India has introduced neural machine translation for nine Indian languages including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi and Malayalam. The number of English-speaking Internet users is expected to grow at a mere 3 per cent to touch 199 million during the same time.

"Of over 500 million people who use Google Translate, most of the users are in India, Indonesia, Brazil and Thailand", it said. This will enable Indian language speakers to consume all of the web's content in nine Indian languages with higher quality translations of everything from song lyrics to news articles to cricket discussions.

Recently, a study conducted by the tech major in collaboration with KPMG India revealed that 234 million Indian language users are now online, as against 175 million users browsing in English. "With today's launches, we're taking a huge step forward to bring down the barriers that stop Indian language users to get more out of the Internet and also help the industry to solve the needs of billion Indians", said Rajan Anandan, VP, India and South East Asia, Google.

According to him, availability of content in local languages as well as access play a crucial role in getting more people to the Internet.

The data released by Google suggest that its machine translation system receives more than one billion requests daily out of which more than 95 percent translation requests comes from users outside the US. Additionally, it has announced that its Gboard Keyboard app will now support all 22 scheduled Indian languages. After introducing support for machine-learning based translation for Hindi last month, the search giant has now extended its neural machine translation to 9 more Indian languages.

The feature may be relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, but could turn users away from other travel apps offering local reviews in favor of Google Search.

The keyboard now has a new feature by which text editing can be done on the go easily. Finally, Google Search results will now include results from Hindi dictionary as well.
