Farm Bureau Welcomes New Ag Secretary

Agriculture Secretary-designate former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue arrives to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington to testify at his confirmation hearing before the Se

That was the reaction of Nebraska and Iowa farmers after the Senate on Monday confirmed Sonny Perdue as the next U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

A veterinarian and agribusinessman who grew up on a dairy and row-crop farm in central Georgia, Perdue served as the state's governor from 2003-11.

Senator David Perdue (R-GA), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, congratulated his first cousin upon the Senate confirmation.

Additionally, NFU urges Perdue to quickly review and approve the Farmer Fair Practices Rules, "which will provide farmers and ranchers with basic protections against anti-competitive practices". Perdue has been backed by half a dozen former Agriculture secretaries, the American Farm Bureau and hundreds of other groups, and received largely bipartisan support throughout the nomination process.

"I look forward to working with him to continue developing smart agricultural policies that support both Kentucky and our country". Mr Trump has proposed a 21% cut in US Department of Agriculture (USDA) programmes and has harshly criticised some global trade deals, saying they have killed American jobs.

Perdue will also need to start fighting for his own department's budget, which would lose over 20 percent of its discretionary spending, according to an initial budget outline released by the Trump White House. While making a stop in Wisconsin last week, President Donald Trump called the Canadian government out for its actions, saying the new trade polices are "unfair" and 'one-sided.' Several Canadian trade groups and the Canadian ambassador to the United States have since pushed back, saying it is not their responsibility to take US surplus milk off its neighbor's hands. He is not associated with the food company Perdue or the poultry producer Perdue Farms.

"I know he will put the needs of farmers, ranchers and others in rural America first", Roberts said.

Mississippian Mike Espy served as agriculture secretary under President Bill Clinton, leaving in 1994.

The Agriculture Committee received many letters in support of his nomination, including support from 6 former U.S. Secretaries of Agriculture representing both Republican and Democratic presidents and another from almost 700 organizations across the agriculture and food value chain.

Mr. President, the Senate will soon vote on the confirmation of Governor Sonny Perdue, the President's nominee for U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

In addition to farm and nutrition policy, I expect Perdue to be a sound champion for trade, something I have heard time and again from Kansans concerned about our ability to open new markets for products made in Kansas. "He understands the impact farm labor shortages, trade agreements and regulations have on a farmer's bottom line and ability to stay in business from one season to the next". Perdue and his long record of public service, I'm confident that he will hit the ground running in his new job. Gov.
