Chechen Leader Denies Reports of Gay Pogrom

Deputy foreign secretary condemns 'utterly barbaric' abuse of gay men in Chechnya

Produced by Human Rights First, the clip features personal accounts of Chechen men who claim to have been abused at the hands of local officials in the Russian republic.

The New York Times also interviewed several gay men who were arrested and endured beatings and torture in Chechnya.

'So is he taking a blind eye or is he complicit in the action of President whose spokesperson, let's remember this, said "you can not detain people who simply do not exist"?'

'He has carried out other violent campaigns in the past, and this time he is directing his efforts at the LGBT community. Gay Russian asylees who are now living stateside read the disturbing accounts, which officials said were compiled from threatened-with-retribution-after-reporting/">reports from Novaya Gazeta, as well as The Guardian, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Pink News.

Officials at the Foreign Office verified to Pink News that President Kadyrov had made the threat in local Russian language media, seen by the United Kingdom government.

Mr Durkan said: "I am deeply concerned at reports in the Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, that men believed to be gay have been abducted, tortured and killed in Chechnya".

Reports of the abuse have drawn global condemnation, as activists have accused the authorities in Russian Federation of turning a blind eye for fear of upsetting Kadyrov in a region where Moscow fought two bloody separatist wars.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has denied allegations of a wave of repression against gay men in the Russian republic. "I borrowed the money and paid it", he said. "It was unbearably painful; I was hanging on with my last strength".

When they met, instead of taking him to his country house as promised, the man drove him to a forest clearing, where three men in military uniform stripped him naked and beat him up, while another filmed, the victim told the Guardian.

Singh Jennings said the protest was meant to show solidarity and highlight the "systemic detention, torture and also murder of gay and bisexual men". "Now [the aim] is the extermination of gay men, so that there are none left in the republic". A Novaya Gazeta reporter who broke the story has gone into hiding after receiving death threats.

In addition, in 2009 Kadyrov stated his approval of honor killings, based on the belief that women are the property of their husbands; and in January 2015 Kadyrov said he would organize protests if a Russian newspaper published the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, saying "we will not allow anyone to insult the prophet, even if it will cost us our lives".

Repressions against the LGBT community reportedly began after an application for a gay rights march in the capital of Grozny.
