Tesla Issues Parking Brake Recall Affecting 53K Cars

Tesla Model S

The company said a small gear fitted inside the vehicles could have been improperly built by its third-party supplier.

The Tesla supercharger is the US -based electric vehicle maker's high-speed device that can charge more than 50 percent of its Model S 90D's battery in 20 minutes.

Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of 53,000 Model S and Model X vehicles due to a potential issue with the parking brake.

Tesla Inc. recalled almost two-thirds of the vehicles it made a year ago to replace faulty electronic parking brakes that may not release properly, marking its second-largest recall to date.

The recall affects vehicles built between February and October 2016.

The company has said the owners of the vehicles will be contacted by email and the parts to fix all the cars should be available by October. If that gear were to break, the parking brake could become stuck in place, the automaker said. Vehicles from the recalled batch were manufactured in the period between February and October 2016. They accused the company of selling them cars with "Enhanced Autopilot" technology, knowing fully well that it was not functional and also lacked standard safety features.

Tesla is insisting the potential problem doesn't constitute a safety issue, and that there have been no reported instances of the potentially problematic parking brake failing to hold a auto or messing with the braking performance in general.

"Service capacity will not be an issue", a Tesla spokeswoman reportedly said in an email. Tesla Motors itself has recalled 90,000 vehicles in November 2015 due to a faulty seatbelt, and Mercedes recalled 1 million vehicles over fire hazards due to some starter components in vehicles sold between 2015 and 2017. The recall was performed "out of an abundance of caution", a company statement says.

Though Tesla stock shed 0.99 percent on Thursday, the stock traded volatile on Friday's pre-market trading.
