Lawyer: United will save evidence in dragged passenger case

Dao, the 69-year-old Vietnamese American doctor was violently removed by aviation security officers from the United flight at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to make room for its own crew members.

After the incident triggered global outrage, United Chief Executive Oscar Munoz apologized to Dao, his family and its customers, saying the carrier would no longer use law enforcement officers to remove passengers from overbooked flights.

Under the change outlined in an internal April 14 email, a crew member must make must-ride bookings at least 60 minutes prior to departure. The change is effective immediately.

The email continued to state in bold letters that no crew member "can displace a customer who has boarded an aircraft" and "there will be no deviation" from the new policy. Crews could previously be booked until the time of departure.

Dao suffered concussion, broke his nose, and lost two front teeth.

His lawyers have filed an emergency request with an IL court to require the carrier to preserve video recordings and other evidence related to the incident.

"That is not who our family at United is". United later said a seat was needed for a commuting crew member, and no one had volunteered to leave the plane.

Delta Air Lines has increased the maximum possible payout to passengers to almost $10,000 if they voluntarily give up a seat on an overbooked flight, the company told AFP Monday.

"This [policy change] ensures situations like flight 3411 never happen again". It's too soon to say what the verdict of this case might be, but United's approval ratings have taken a steep dip since this most recent incident.

"The airline didn't even have the courtesy to give the Daos their luggage after Dr. Dao was dragged off their flight [by Chicago aviation security police officers] and transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital", Mr Demetrio said.

While this policy change is certainly a step in the right direction for the airline's paying customers, United still has a lot of work to do to fully recover from this fiasco.
