President Buhari congratulates Turkey on successful referendum

Turkish President declares victory

"The people's will has been reflected at the ballot box, and the debate is over", he said.

"Everyone should respect the outcome, especially the main opposition", he added.

"What's important now is that Turkey enacts these constitutional changes in a way that sustains democracy, respects the rule of law and protects fundamental freedoms in line with global commitments", U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman, James Slack, told reporters in London on Tuesday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also suggested holding a referendum on whether to bring back capital punishment.

Hundreds of people lined up outside election board offices in Ankara and Istanbul to submit petitions requesting the board reverse its pronouncement.

Turkey's parliament has approved a three-month extension of the state of emergency declared in the wake of last year's failed coup. "Erdogan of Turkey has told associates", Newsweek reported, "he believes he must keep pressure on Trump's business partner there to essentially blackmail the president into extraditing a political enemy".

The immediate danger now lies in the fact that nearly half of the country is nearly entirely against Erdogan and the new constitution, which could spell political turmoil and greater instability all the way up until the issue is laid to rest, one way or another, in Turkey's first presidential election under the new constitution in 2019.

While AKP supporters stressed the need for Erdogan and other party members to connect with the "no" voters to make them feel included, President Erdogan had already overstepped boundaries of any other president, and with the new constitution in place, there will be fewer checks and balances to reign in his power. The president will also be allowed to keep his ties to a political party. ISIS, a self-styled state, emerged from the chaos fueled by an ill-advised invasion of Iraq in 2003 and has taken advantage of the conditions created by USA interventions from Afghanistan to Libya to set up shop. He says it has not negatively affected the public. Tana de Zulueta, head of the observer mission, told reporters that the group had paid a courtesy call and held a "cordial" meeting with electoral board members.

Asked to comment about Erdogan's rebuke, Ms de Zulueta said: "I don't have an opinion, we are invited by the Turkish authorities to observe". We are invited by the Turkish authorities to observe. "We share our report and we completed our mandate".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan must heal a divided country after narrowly winning a contested referendum, but it is unclear whether he is interested in forging the compromises needed for reconciliation, analysts say.

The European Union also urged a probe into the poll fraud claims after global observers voiced concerns, but both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin called Erdogan to offer congratulations.
