McDavid, Kassian score short-handed, Oilers beat Sharks 2-0

EDMONTON, Alberta The Sharks were handed one power play opportunity after another Friday night as the Edmonton Oilers repeatedly put themselves down a man with a handful of reckless plays.

The result was a sharp contrast from Game 1, when the Oilers were outshot 44-19 en route to a 3-2 overtime loss.

Melker Karlsson scored 3:22 into overtime giving the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night at Rogers Place. The Sharks outplayed the Oilers in Game 1, while the Oilers outplayed the Sharks in Game 2.

That doesn't come as a big surprise to the Sharks or coach Pete DeBoer. "I hope to come out tomorrow and join the guys, but we'll just have to wait and see". So we come out and get a pretty good start and they get one (by Oscar Klefbom) that goes off one of our guys (David Schlemko) a little bit. "This isn't going to be a short series".

The Oilers are as whole have been completely made over and only two Sharks remain from that series (Thornton and Marleau) and that series was over a decade ago and means absolutely nothing.

When the puck drops in Edmonton tonight, the San Jose Sharks will be one of the 16 with an eye keenly on that shiny silver prize. "When you don't have the puck you're not going to get many shots on goal".

"The more we won, the crazier it got on the street", he said. "We just have to worry about ourselves and what we've got going on, knowing our details and assignments".

Officials with the Oilers Entertainment Group say it's the biggest 50/50 jackpot in team history.

Joonas Donskoi collected a puck behind the Oilers; net that had been rimmed around the boards by Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The Sharks will need to limit what is arguably the best one-two combination in hockey: Oilers center Connor McDavid led the NHL with 100 points, while right winger Leon Draisaitl scored 29 times and finished eighth in the scoring race.

"We were down by two but I thought we were still playing well, we just needed a lift", Ward said.

Thornton has been skating in practice, and head coach Peter DeBoer has said he expects Thornton to return at some point in the series.

There needs to be balanced zone time and better play from the Oilers in the neutral zone.

The Sharks were unable to take advantage, continuing a season-long power malaise.

The Sharks had more than three power plays just three times in their final 14 games of the season.

"It doesn't matter where we were in March", he said. They called it and we have to make them pay for taking liberties.

"What we're really concentrating on is how do we get more and more Oilers fans a chance to be part of this and in Rogers Place?" "They had the puck all night".

San Jose, which has played 110 playoff games since the Oilers were last in the postseason in 2006, got steady performances throughout its lineup Wednesday.

Key player Logan Couture is back on the ice, out for three weeks, after the center took a puck to the face.
