Apple receives permit to test autonomous cars in California

Apple wants a piece of this action, but it's got a lot of competition: 29 other companies have autonomous vehicle testing permits in California.

As per California DMV, "The California Autonomous Vehicle Testing Regulations require every manufacturer authorized to test autonomous vehicles on public roads to submit an annual report summarizing the disengagements of the technology during testing". Apple joins previously permitted companies Tesla, Google, and a bunch of automakers you have probably already guessed are on the list.

Apple's fully autonomous "Project Titan" may be dead in the water, but that doesn't mean the California tech company has given up entirely on the idea of a self-driving auto.

Uber recently made a decision to temporally "put the breaks", so to speak, on testing driverless cars due to a crash in Arizona, according to Bloomberg Technology. The team still has about 1,000 people, although Apple isn't confirming anything-including that there even is a Project Titan.

Apple executives have been coy about their interest in cars.

Some predicted that the company would itself be producing drivable vehicles. New rumors indicate Apple being concentrated on the software and devices that will allow autonomous cars, instead of the development of an entire automobile.

To date, the tech giant has been infuriatingly secretive about it's efforts to build a self-driving vehicle, code named Project Titan.

Despite the permit, it's still unclear what specific aspect Apple is working on. Apple has become the 30th company to be granted a testing permit.

"Every company will have to have some solution for transportation", Cybart said.

The company was "excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation", it said at the time.

Many proponents of autonomous vehicles argue that they will actually be safer and lead to fewer accidents than cars operated by human drivers.

Apple Inc has secured a permit to test autonomous vehicles in California, fueling speculation that it is working on self-driving auto technology in a crowded arena of companies hoping to offer those cars to the masses. Apple registered six drivers that monitor these cars.
