Syrian President Assad's allies say US attack crosses 'red lines'

Trump Urges World to Join U.S. in Ending Terrorism

"You saw this awful tragedy on innocent people, a lot of them children, and the first reaction from Russian Federation wasn't 'how frightful, ' it wasn't 'how could they do this, ' it wasn't 'how did this happen, ' it was: 'Assad didn't do it.' Why was that the reaction?"

"For his part, Tillerson on Friday said he was disappointed" by Russia's reaction "because it indicates their continued support" for the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad. "If we would want to appeal rationally to Russia", McMaster said. "Why they are supporting a regime that is committing mass murder against its own people".

"I discussed these plans in detail with Secretary Tillerson".

Syrian activists and state media said the overnight airstrike by the USA -led coalition on a northern village held by the Islamic State group killed at least 13 civilians, including children.

Rather, the U.S. Tomahawk missile strike was meant to be "a strong signal" to Syria not to use chemical weapons again.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has said "terrorists are celebrating" the United States strikes on the air base.

Syria's army said six people were killed in the early hours of Friday morning after the USA fired almost 60 Tomahawk missiles at Shayrat Air Base, in retaliation for a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed scores of civilians earlier this week.

"(Russian President) Vladimir Putin believes that complete disregard for factual information about the use by terrorists of chemical weapons drastically aggravates the situation", the statement said.

"US aggression against Shayrat (airbase) strengthens regional extremism and terror, and global lawlessness and instability, and must be condemned", Rouhani said.

Boris Johnson cancelled the visit, scheduled for 10 April, on Saturday, saying events in Syria had changed priorities.

Haley reiterated the comments of Rex Tillerson, the U.S. secretary of state, who insisted that defeating Islamic State was the priority for the White House.

"I agree with Ambassador Haley that I don't think there's any political solution to the civil war in Syria that doesn't mean that Assad moves aside, because he's tearing up the country", Kaine told host Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press".

"Regime change is something that we think is going to happen", Haley replied.

"Congress needs to work with the president to try and deal with this long-term strategy, lack of strategy, really, in Syria", he said.
