Christians celebrate Easter with religious fervour

Ukrainian Orthodox faithful light candles from the Holy Fire brought from Jerusalem in St. Volodymyr Cathedral during the ceremony of the Holy Fire in Kiev Ukraine Saturday

Thousands of Christians flocked to churches across the country as part of their Easter Sunday celebrations.

Hundreds of members of the Christian community visited the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park to pay tribute to those who were martyred in suicide bombing inside the park on the eve of Easter during March 2016.

One of the main attractions of this festival is the gift of Easter Eggs, made of chocolates, given especially to children.

"As Christians, we believe that Jesus has risen and our journey with our Lord has been renewed and therefore, it is important for us to forgive and forget all those that may have hurt us and seek forgiveness from all those that we might have hurt", he said. Originating from the German word "Oster" (New Life Renewal), Easter is the culmination of over two months of dedicated worship. On Easter Sunday, veiled cross in churches were unveiled.

Pastor Chester still wants to carry on the traditional message behind the resurrection of Jesus Christ and he also wants to extend that love to others in the community. Then twelve candles are lit and these are taken round the rest of the church lighting the other candles.

According to Christians, Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. Others respond, "Truly, He is risen!" Tableaux enacting the resurrection of the Christ were staged and Easter eggs were distributed.

Like many Christians, Sapna Anu B. George began her Easter celebrations the previous day by going out, shopping, and preparing a special meal, including appam, Kerala's unique bread item, and duck.

Masses were staggered throughout the day for the various denominations that co-exist, often uneasily, in the church in Jerusalem's Old City.
