OPCW declines to comment on its probe into Syria chemical weapons incident

Qatar's Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad nearly certainly did not direct the chemical weapons attack on Idlib.

"Definitely, 100 percent for us, it's fabrication", he said in the interview on Wednesday in reference to the alleged chemical weapons attack.

Western powers blame the gas attack, which killed scores of civilians - many of them children - on Assad's forces.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has begun an investigation into the alleged attack, but Russian Federation on Wednesday blocked a UN Security Council resolution demanding Syria cooperate with the probe.

"Our experts are fully aware of the significance of the task they are expected to fulfil and I am confident that they will do it in a professional and impartial manner using all available technical means", Uzumcu said.

Claiming that there are " a lot of fake videos now", he insisted that his government gave up all chemical weapons in 2013. He continued, "We don't know whether those dead children were killed in Khan Sheikhun". "Were they dead at all".

Denouncing the chemical attack, President Donald Trump ordered a strike that saw 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles destroy the airbase in central Syria. "We have never used our chemical arsenal in our history".

Syria's Ambassador to the United Nations Bashar Ja'afari address Security Council after a resolution vote condemning Syria's use of chemical weapons failed to pass, Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at U.N. headquarters.

Assad also said Syria's military had given up all chemical weapons, AFP said on its Twitter account, quoting remarks in an interview with the Syrian president. He insisted his forces had turned over all chemical weapons stockpiles in 2013, under a deal brokered by Russian Federation to avoid threatened United States military action.

The statement says "the two leaders agreed that the attack in question be investigated by the OPCW, which is an independent organization whose legitimacy is recognized".

In an interview with news agency AFP, conducted under restrictions imposed by the Syrian government at the presidential palace in Damascus, Assad claimed the reported details of what happened were not credible because their source was al-Qaeda's former affiliate in Syria, Nusra Front.

The UN Charter, a US treaty obligation, prohibits the use of force "against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state".

The Syrian leader also lashed out at the Trump administration, saying peace talks that would ensure a lasting truce in Syria have stalled because the U.S. has no interest in ending the war.
