The Boston Globe reports that the musician - whose full name was John Warren 'J.' Geils Jr. - died of natural causes and that the police department will still be investigating his death, though foul play was not suspected.

The band's lineup was stable through their years of success and included charismatic lead singer Peter Wolf, Danny Klein on bass, Stephen Jo Bladd on drums, Seth Justman on keyboards and Richard (Magic Dick) Salwitz on harmonica and saxophone.

Wolf left the band to pursue a solo career and did not appear on its final album, released in 1984. The group rose to fame with their Freeze Frame album, which produced the 1981 song "Centerfold", which sat at number one for six weeks and charted for 70 weeks. The latter included both the title track and 'Centerfold, ' which spent no fewer than six weeks at No. 1 in the United States and became an worldwide smash.

"I know you usually only take in-park requests, but maybe you could play a J. Geils tune in light of this sad breaking news", one person asked Josh Kantor, who plays the organ at Red Sox games. Police responded to a welfare check at John's Groton, MA home where he had lived for the past 35 years and found his body April 11. And Geils was married for 28 years, although he and his former wife Kris amicably split in 1999.

Vocalist Peter Wolf shared a photo of the band on his Facebook page with the caption, "Thinking of all the times we kicked it high and rocked down the house!"

"I Do" (from Monkey Island, 1977) - The band temporarily changed their name to "Geils" for Monkey Island, which wasn't their finest moment. The band officially broke up in 1985, occasionally coming together for reunion shows.

Geils himself remained active in music, putting out a few albums with other groups.
