Italy's Emma Morano, the world's oldest person, dies at 117

Mrs Morano on the day of her 117th birthday

The world's oldest person died in Italy today at the age of 117, media reports say. She lived through two world wars and more than 90 Italian governments. "Today she has slowed down a bit, reducing the number to two some days because she says three can be too much", her doctor, Carlo Bava, said past year.

Carlo Bava, Morano's doctor for decades, told the AP he last visited with the 117-year-old on Friday and "she thanked me and held my hand" as she usually did. "I'm happy she didn't suffer but passed away that way, tranquilly", he said.

Emma Morano was born on 29 November 1899 in the Piedmont region of Italy.

Morano told reporters that she had a fiancé who died during World War I, before she was forced into marrying someone else who threatened to kill her if she refused.

Ms Morano lost a son to cot death when he was six months old and left her husband in the first half of the last century after he beat her.

"I didn't want to be dominated by anyone", Morano told the New York Times when she was 115.

Morano's doctor, who lives a few blocks away from his patient, had been her physician for almost a quarter of a century.

Morano worked in a factory until she was 65, according to Reuters.

She had clung to her independence, only taking on a full-time carer a couple of years ago, though she had not left her small two-room apartment for 20 years.

The world longevity record, he noted, remained with French woman Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 in 1997, having outlived both her daughter and grandson.

She also defied health advice, Dr Bava said on Saturday.

Her eyesight did become very poor and she latterly spent much of her days sleeping.

"When I first knew her she used to eat three eggs a day".
