Aadhaar pay: Now make digital transaction without a smartphone

Instalike Sorry Mr Trump Narendra Modi is most popular world leader on Instagram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the BHIM-Aadhaar platform-a merchant interface linking the unique identification number to the Bharat Interface for Money mobile application-at Nagpur on the 126th birth anniversary of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. AP Hota, managing director and chief executive officer at NPCI - which built and runs Bhim - feels this would no longer be an issue since, with the government pushing for linking Aadhaar numbers with bank accounts, potentially every Indian with a bank account could use it. "If you don't have a phone you can use your thumb", he said, referring to fingerprint authentication.

The 100-day campaign in 100 cities saw over 15,000 institutions going cashless in 27 states and seven union territories and lakhs of people opening new bank accounts and getting new Aadhaar Cards.

Still, the launch of Aadhaar Pay does come amid concerns surrounding Aadhaar itself. Soon the poor of the country will chant Digidhan, Nijidhan.

CEO NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant said that the launch of BHIM-Aadhaar App and the launch of the two schemes - cashback and referral schemes - would provide a "major impetus to the digital payment revolution in India".

Modi, who paid tribute to Ambedkar at Deekshabhoomi, where the Dalit icon had embraced Buddhism, linked the new schemes with his vision of social justice and financial empowerment.

On the occasion of Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary, PM Modi launched the official BHIM-Aadhaar Pay app, meant for merchants. However, the new platform, Aadhaar Pay, is developed for merchants to receive payments from customers digitally over the counter using Aadhaar's biometric authentication.

Showering praise on the "architect of the Indian Constitution" at a function here, Mr. Modi said, "Like Shiva [a Hindu god], Dr. Ambedkar also drank the poison of hatred all his life but he did not carry even the slightest of bitterness neither in the Indian Constitution nor in his speeches".

Modi also said the BHIM app was making an impact on people across the county and that the DigiDhan movement is a "Safai Abhiyaan" aimed at fighting against corruption. As per the referral bonus scheme, If a merchant adds a person to BHIM app, after 3 transactions by the person, your account will get a credit of Rs 10. "BHIM APP will be a case study in foreign universities", he said.

Merchants would be required to download the BHIM Aadhar Pay payment app on their android smartphone connected to a biometric reader.

Under the NITI Aayog's two incentive schemes, Lucky Grahak Yojana and DigiDhan Vyapar Yojan, a prize money of Rs 258 crore, was won by 16 lakh individuals.

It was one of several measures aimed at promoting digital transactions in the aftermath of the 8 November demonetization of high-value banknotes, which triggered a nationwide cash crunch.
