Thunder star Russell Westbrook resting against Timberwolves

ThunderNotes: Presti speaks on Westbrook's record, Thunder lock into No. 6 seed

Westbrook ended his historic day with a 36-foot dagger to finish with 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to pass Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson for most triple-doubles in an National Basketball Association season.

The mark fell with Westbrook's 10th assist - a kick-out pass beyond the arc to Semaj Christon, who sank the three-point jumper.

But since notching his 41st triple-double of the season on Tuesday he had twice fallen short as he vied for number 42. However, Westbrook's recent onslaught of triple-doubles, plus Harden's injury, seem to have turned the narrative back the other way. Westbrook also logged his 19th 40-point game of the season with 45 points in a 103-100 win against the Memphis Grizzlies on April 6.

"It's wonderful", Westbrook told Fox Sports' Lesley McCaslin after the game about the record.

Westbrook achieved the feat while putting up 50 points, with an incredible buzzer-beating three-pointer sealing victory over the Denver Nuggets. Portland will be the No. 8 seed when the postseason begins next week.

LeBron James also had a triple-double Sunday. Recording a triple-double for the 42nd time this year, Westbrook has now beaten Hall of Famer' Oscar Robertson's record for most triple-doubles set in 1961-2.

While the game came down to the wire, the start of the game was anything but close. They not having Kevin Durant as their leader after he chose to play for the Warriors, in which the Warriors eliminated the Thunder previous year in the Western Conference Finals.

Not only did the 28-year-old break the record for triple-doubles in a season with his 42nd, he also chose to win the game for Oklahoma City Thunder in the final seconds. With the Thunder locked into sixth place, a first-round playoff matchup against fellow MVP candidate James Harden and the No. 3 seed Houston Rockets promises to be exciting. Their hopes were on the line in the final minute of the game, but they couldn't stop Westbrook from scoring and Westbrook took advantage of it.

But Westbrook has a long way to go to be king (I like Kawhi Leonard for MVP, by the way). I'm very thankful and blessed to be able to go out and compete at the highest level.
