Syria's Assad says chemical attack '100 per cent fabrication'

Aftermath of the US missile attack on a Syrian military airbase

Eighty-nine people were killed and others injured in the April 4 gas attack in Idlib province.

However, since 2013, there have been continued allegations that chemicals such as chlorine and ammonia have been used against civilians in the ongoing civil war.

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town was a "fabrication" to justify a USA military strike.

He went even further and said the entire incident was a fabrication, complete with faked video footage of dead children, who may not have been dead at all.

Mr Assad told AFP TV: "It's not clear whether it happened or not, how can you verify a video? You have a lot of fake videos now, and you have the proof that those videos were fake".

In the six days since the U.S. military strike, Russian strikes have killed 56 civilians - including 10 children, and eight women - and the Syrian government has killed at least 42 civilians, including 14 children and seven women, according to new figures from the SNHR.

We don't know whether those dead children were killed in Khan Sheikhoun, were they dead at all?

"The planes have not left the skies of Khan Sheikhun for one second since the chemical attack", one resident, who asked to remain anonymous, told MEE by phone. They recounted the horrific aftermath of a gas attack, saying the town of Khan Sheikhoun was struck by regime warplanes.

There was also little sign that Syria's greatest ally, Russia, has shifted its position. The Syrian president claims the US was working with terrorists and falsified the chemical attack as an excuse to destroy the Al Shayrat air base.

Following a meeting between US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday, Donald Trump warned relations were "at an all-time low".

The Khan Sheikhun incident prompted the first direct U.S. military action against Assad's government since the war began, with 59 cruise missiles hitting the Shayrat airbase three days after the suspected chemical attack.

The resolution demands the Syrian government cooperates with an investigation into the chemical attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

The majority of the worldwide community has blamed the attack, which killed 87 people, including many children, on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Based on comparisons with previous weeks, the number of air strikes by the Syrian government and allies has increased 20 percent this week, the SNHR figures show, and there has also been at least one chemical attack. "Apart from anything else, we believe it's the only regime that has the capability to make such an attack".
