FCC Announces Results of Wireless Spectrum Incentive Auction

Nearly 2,000 stations were eligible to participate in the auction.

Verizon (VZ) continues to view its mobile wholesale services as profitable. "Congratulations to the FCC!" said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile.

"Spectrum revenues must be used to support those who rely on locally produced news and information to engage with their neighbors, learn about volunteer opportunities, make decisions about voting, run for public office, get information about small businesses, and support their children in local schools", he said.

While the auction was created to incentivize Comcast and other owners of low-band spectrum to free it up for mobile carriers to use, it could take a while before smartphone owners see any improvement in their data speeds. The Un-carrier won 45% of all low-band spectrum sold, covering 100% of the U.S. and Puerto Rico and enabling the Un-carrier to compete in every single corner of the country.

"The broadcasters showed up and, except for T-Mo, the carriers did not", said Preston Padden, a former Disney executive and a broadcast industry advocate. "Comcast bought less than expected, Dish Network bought more, and Verizon bought nothing at all".

The FCC announced the results of its incentive wireless spectrum auction, the most complicated auction that agency has run to date.

"These auction results are a win for everyone, especially consumers, and generated BILLIONS [emphasis his] for broadcasters and USA taxpayers", he said.

"T-Mobile now has the largest swath of unused low-band spectrum in the country". So this is pretty much just T-Mobile's attempt to hang with the big dogs.

T-Mobile's new coverage map with 600MHz.

While it usually takes a significant amount of time to see the results of newly acquired spectrum, T-Mobile promises significant network expansion by the end of 2017. Dish has been hoovering up spectrum for several years now.

The airwaves auction, which allowed broadcasters to repurpose their airwaves for mobile use, generated $19.8 billion in gross revenue for 70 MHz of spectrum. Both of those carriers made big investments in spectrum in the 700MHz range - which has similar properties - years ago, and they've been able to use it to build strong, nationwide LTE networks. If you consider U.S. Cellular a rural carrier, they too fall into that category, having won $328 million worth of spectrum. We congratulate all bidders who were successful in the incentive auction, and we applaud all of those past and present Commission staffers who worked so diligently on every aspect of this complex undertaking. With this purchase, T-Mobile now has significantly more low-band spectrum per customer than any other major provider and almost TRIPLE the low-band spectrum per customer than Verizon.
