Sessions visits US-Mexico border to push migrant crackdown
On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions addressed border patrol agents in Nogales, Arizona, where he vowed to pose harsher penalties on undocumented immigrants who commit crimes in the United States.
"We will secure this border and bring the full weight of both the immigration courts and the federal enforcement and prosecutors to combat this attack on our national security and our sovereignty", he said.
Sessions said President Trump's rhetoric was having an effect, citing a recent Department of Homeland Security report indicating that fewer people are attempting to cross America's southern border illegally.
"It is here, on this sliver of land, where we first take our stand against this filth", he said. "It's yet another example of the Trump administration treating all immigrants as threats and as criminals".
Also announced on Tuesday were streamlined procedures for hiring dozens of new immigration judges along with mandated detention of those arrested at the border.
He called Sessions' actions "appalling, but they are also predictable for a man who has seethed intolerance for his entire public career". "Instead, the Trump administration, and Mr. Sessions, are set on throwing good taxpayer money after bad on a boondoggle of a wall that will only cause greater harm to families and wildlife along the border, while failing as immigration policy".
"And nearly sort of a demoralization of the fabric of law enforcement and law and order", he said "And really an undermining of the respect we owe our law officers who walk these streets every day".
Greg Chen, Director of Government Relations for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, criticized the new policy for what he said amounted to targeting migrants who pose no threat to USA citizens. Trump said repeatedly that he would crack down on criminal organizations that help drive illegal immigration and seek to deport 2 to 3 million undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
The Department of Justice did not provide details on how these efforts will be funded and whether there will be additional resources so the renewed focus on immigration-related enforcement on nonviolent officials will not lead to lower levels of prosecutions and investigation of other crimes.
He also said all 94 USA attorneys will be told to "make assault on federal officers a priority (for prosecution)".
His name is Jeff Sessions, and illegal immigrants had better beware.
US attorney's offices will also crack down on individuals who illegally re-enter the USA without authorization. He also recommended that prosecutors charge "criminal aliens" with document fraud and aggravated identity theft, which carries a two-year minimum sentence. People who are caught by agents, or those who surrender at the border, are subject to deportation unless they can establish grounds for asylum.
Sessions is one of the leading forces behind Trump's immigration policy, and has always been a proponent in the Senate of hard-line immigration policies.
Politico reporter Josh Dawsey took a partial quote from a Wall Street Journal story on Sessions' speech out of context, tweeting that Sessions described illegal immigrants as filth.
