Doctor Who stars give tour of TARDIS in behind-the-scenes clip

Doctor Who's Pearl Mackie says she wants to play James Bond

Pearl Mackie, right, joins Doctor Who this season as the Doctor's new companion. In fact, the mere concept that The Doctor could regenerate was created as a way to recast the lead role when the original Doctor, William Hartnell, chose to leave the show in 1966.

While many other Companions simply accept the Doctor's wonky reality, Bill is going to need a little explanation before risking her life for adventures in space and time.

The premiere episode of the show's new season screens on BBC America on April 15 at 9 p.m. ET.

"Obviously every companion is completely different", she said.

How would you describe the dynamic between Bill and The Doctor?

Fern Britton was left embarrassed on The One Show after its revealed she hates Doctor Who - in front of Pearl Mackie.

Asked if she wanted to be a female Jane Bond, she told said, "Nah nah, James". First we were teased with the Ice Warriors, then the original 1966 version of the Cybermen, and finally the jaw dropping revelation that after a gap of seven years, John Simm will be returning as the Master.

Like Capaldi and Moffat, executive producer Brian Minchin has been a Doctor Who fan since he was a child.

Speaking about Mackie in particular, Capaldi praised: "I think people will really love her".

The 58-year-old actor has portrayed the time-travelling scientist since 2013 after he replaced Matt Smith as the titular character but he has admitted he always knew his stint would be relatively short because he doesn't like to do one thing for too long.

That said, the third season definitely gave him plenty to work with.

Two worlds collide when the Doctor meets Bill. "She is not afraid of things that happen to her or of what the Doctor shows". Now that Capaldi is an icon to children, he's keeping his past as Malcolm Tucker, the foul-mouthed spin doctor on the British government satire "The Thick of It", in check.

When she heard she got the role, she didn't quite believe it, noting: "it's probably one of the best jobs on television".
