Burger King's Whopper gets prank Wikipedia edits in ad gag

Burger King's newest TV ad has a disastrous flaw

"OK, Google, what is the Whopper burger?" he says. Finally, a little gadget for our homes that harnesses the power of Google's search engine and it's external capabilities, the same way that the Echo became an extension of Amazon's shopping and media experience.

It really hasn't been a good week for brands, and though Burger King hasn't physically assaulted anyone here, it's natural to feel personally assaulted by advertisements in the home on a device you had originally thought was for personal use. So, it's up to our friendly Burger King employee to get crafty when it comes to explaining the Whopper.

Burger King's newest ad is only 15 seconds, which is not a long time. Burger King seems to have the advantage of being the first company to try something like this - it isn't hard to imagine that subsequent attempts at controlling a smart device through advertising will be met with outright disdain.

According to David Carroll, associate professor of media design at the Parsons School of Design, Burger King's approach might be a novel gimmick, but it will wear off fast.

It's not often that mentions of Burger King appear on websites dedicated to technology and gadgetry, but Burger King has forced its way in nonetheless.

Burger King didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

And maybe the funniest of all, when Alexa accidentally ordered a small girl a dollhouse and four pounds of cookies, it made the news, then the news broadcast accidentally triggered reactions from devices in the homes of those watching the broadcast.

In a demo, the ad prompts a Google Home voice-activated speaker to start reading a description of the Whopper from Wikipedia. When Business Insider tested it out, they experienced the same thing.

The ads can also Google on other devices - though, for a Google app on the iPhone, for instance, you have to press the speaker button.

"I think it's going to backfire if it keeps happening", he said. Consumers typically leave these devices on, meaning they could be triggered at any time with the correct words.
