Trump's grandchildren sing for Chinese president in Mandarin

President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart on Friday hailed progress in U.S. -Sino relations following their first bilateral meeting. However, when the two presidents met in Florida during the early hours in China , there was nearly no reporting at all. Not only did it break with Chinese protocol, but it upstaged Xi, who had hoped to use the meeting to be seen by the world as Trump's equal. An anti-Chinese government demonstrator, left, is involved in an altercation with a supporter of the government, right, in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Thursday, April 6, 2017.

Trump outraged China in December when he took the unorthodox step of accepting a phone call from the Taiwanese president.

The two leaders will likely spend Friday in a series of working sessions. Having gotten through the talks without making any major, specific commitments, the Chinese president would seem to have won some ground - or at least some wiggle room - in the Trump talks. After their first face-to-face at the Mar-a-Lago resort, he trumpeted they had developed an "outstanding" relationship.

But the two days of talks at Trump's private estate in Florida were expected to focus on what Trump has described as China's unfair trade practices and inadequate efforts to halt North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile program. There is no shortage of topics to discuss, but one of the biggest measure of this meeting may be how the two leaders size each other up.

The meeting of the leaders of the world's two largest economies was largely overshadowed by the United States missile strike on Syria. White House officials didn't make a direct connection between the action in Syria and any potential strike on North Korea's nuclear program.

Before the meeting at his Mar-a-Largo estate, Trump was reportedly presented with options to respond to the North's nuclear weapons program including placing us nukes in South Korea or assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. DPRK stands for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

However, whether the US would, in fact, take military action against North Korea is a different story, given the covert nature of Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs and its growing weapons capabilities that could cause "tremendous damage in the region", added Blinken, who also served as deputy national security adviser to former President Barack Obama.

Trump also said that he expects himself and President Jinping to overcome many problems, a marked contrast to the stridently anti-China rhetoric of Trump's 2016 election campaign.

CHINESE President Xi Jinping and his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, pledged on Friday to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and to manage their differences based on mutual respect.

China's leaders in fact have always been concerned about the yawning USA trade deficit with their country, 7 billion in 2016.

"We look forward to being together many times in the future and I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away", said President Trump before his afternoon meeting with President Xi. He did not elaborate.

China's position on Syria is much closer to Russia's than to the US.

A spokesperson China's foreign ministry said it opposed the use of force in global affairs but stopped short of explicitly condemning the United States attack.

In fact, the North justifies its nuclear weapons as a necessary deterrent to the USA military threat and has over the past weeks warned that the biggest-ever joint U.S. The two leaders appeared to develop a rapport, she said. "I believe we will keep developing in a stable way to form friendly relations...for the peace and stability of the world, we will also fulfill our historical responsibility".

The talks were nearly completely overshadowed by Thursday night's US missile attack on Syria.

After the strikes, Trump addressed the nation and said that it is in the "vital national interest" of the U.S.to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.

China's response was muted.

A USA administration official told Reuters that Washington expects to have to use legal tools to fight for us companies, such as pursuing World Trade Organization lawsuits.
