One For Arthur wins 170th Grand National

With odds of 14-1, One For Arthur's win hammered Scotland's bookmakers.

The Lucinda Russell-trained gelding enjoyed a thrilling sprint down the home stretch, having battled with Cause Of Causes over the final few fences.

Cause of Causes, 16-1, finished second with Saint Are, 25-1, and 8-1 pre-race favourite Blaklion third and fourth respectively.

The Scottish-trained victor One for Arthur was the unexpected victor - only the second win by a Scottish-trained horse, the last being in 1979.

"This is the best feeling I have ever had or probably ever will have and I want to take most of it in".

The eight-year-old horse is trained by the partner of Peter Scudamore, a former eight-time champion jockey who never won the grueling race in 12 attempts in the saddle.

"What a fantastic day we had, it's just incredible", said Russell.

One For Arthur is the first Grand National victor to be trained in Scotland since 1979.

All 40 horses came home safely.

Russell was becoming the fourth woman to train the National victor after Jenny Pitman, Venetia Williams and Sue Smith, and went on: "It means everything. I can't quite believe it".

If it seems miraculous, then those working the miracle are all employed at the Injured Jockeys' Fund's northern rehabilitation centre, Jack Berry House.

"He's fantastic. He's improved every time".

"This is a fairy tale but for excellent medical care I wouldn't have made it", said Fox, 24.

One For Arthur is owned by the Two Golf Widows, Deborah Thomson and Belinda McClung, and they were left in disbelief after watching their horse triumph by four and a half lengths.

"It was an fantastic day and a unbelievable experience for me as an amateur".

She went on to win another Grand National with Royal Athlete in 1995. Our team of number crunchers feel like they've cracked the code with Just A Par, a selection that we know will resonate with all the US Masters golf fans out there.

Ms Thomson said: "He's a superstar, dreams have come true for us really". Arthur just cruised that race, Derek rode so well and I'm just a bit lost for words really.

"He's fantastic and he got a great ride". We didn't realise we had just bought such an awesome horse, but he has given us such a wonderful journey.
