Garcia beats Rose to claim Masters Green Jacket

Playing his best golf in the final leg of the Masters Tournament, Garcia wiped out a two-shot delay with six holes to play, before defeating Justin Rose in overtime and getting his first major title after nearly two decades of misery.

Olazabal, 51, had his own sojourn with eight top-10 finishes in the majors before breaking through at the Masters.

Spain's Sergio Garcia ended almost two decades of Major disappointment when he beat England's Justin Rose in a playoff to win the U.S. Masters on Sunday, donning the Green Jacket on what would have been the 60th birthday of his hero and two-time champion, the late Seve Ballesteros.

Garcia responded with a wonderful approach to the green that had the crowd roaring, they sensed it was his time and indeed despite a good shot onto the green from Rose it was Garcia's time as his opponent had to settle for a bogey.

After his win Sunday, his Green Jacket draped over his shoulders, Garcia had fun with that "best player never to win a major" label.

Turning serious, Garcia said, "Because where my head was at sometimes, I did think, 'Am I ever going to win one?". I felt great. I felt in control.

"I have plenty more looks, and I feel good about it happening". So, Sergio Garcia joined Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal as three three Spaniards who won the Masters.

Spieth has a green jacket and a U.S. Open title as comfort; Fowler still needs a breakthrough.

"Jose Maria's [note] was very special because he's my idol".

Garcia has been plagued by self doubt in the majors and once said he did not have what it takes to be a major victor.

"He did mention a couple of things that kind of touched my heart a little bit".

"Dear friends, I introduce you to the Master champion in Augusta!". They exchanged shots and they exchanged runs, some more dazzling than others.

When a reporter tried to make an analogy comparing Garcia's career - pre-2017 Masters - to a horror movie because of his string of major championship heartbreaks and missteps, Garcia would have none of that.

Both Garcia and Rose were nine-under-par after 72 holes, three shots clear of nearest challenger Charl Schwartzel. Since emerging on the scene in the 1999 PGA Championship with his legendary "behind the tree shot", Garcia has been a constant contender on the tour.

He had to accept a one-shot penalty because he could not access his ball, but he still found a way to enter the normal. Garcia went onto hit a handsome approach shot into the 18th which lead to a birdie 3 and with Rose making a bogey this sealed him the coveted Green Jacket.

Garcia did not let himself fall after missing a six-foot row at the 16th hole or another five-foot for a birdie and victory at the last regulatory hole.

"A lot of things were going on through my mind", added the Ryder Cup stalwart. There were some holes I could go after. "I am so happy". For me, golf is about April to September.

"I see myself having many more chances to come."
His game was now better than ever and his balky putter made more than he missed inside 10 feet. Of course I could.

Garcia opened the back nine with two bogeys and trailed by two at the par-5 13th, where his drive landed under a bush.
