NASA astronaut and 2 Russian cosmonauts return to Earth

Two Russian cosmonauts and a U.S. astronaut touched down safely in central Kazakhstan today following a 173-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Shane Kimbrough, a NASA astronaut and Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko will leave the ISS in a Soyuz capsule.

The Expedition 50 crew members worked on hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science aboard the International Space Station.

The International Space Station crew member Peggy Whitson waves before a space suit check at the Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, November 17, 2016.

Recently, Whitson has recently established another record regarding spacewalks.

Georgia Tech graduate Shane Kimbrough is back here on Earth following a almost six-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). She already held records for the most time spent in space by a woman and for the most time spent spacewalking by a woman. The two astronauts on the mission were Commander Shane Kimbrough and Flight Engineer Peggy Whitson. Astronaut Jeffrey Williams set the record last September.

The person with the most spacewalking time is retired cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyev at 82 hours, 22 minutes of experience.

Three crewmembers left the ISS after spending 173 days in space.

Russian cosmonaut Andrei Borisenko undergoes a medical check shortly after Russia's Soyuz MS-02 space capsule landed near Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan, April 10, 2017.

NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and Fyodor Yurchikhin of Roscosmos are scheduled to launch for the ISS this coming April 20. Now, she is bound to make history the second time, being called the commanding officer of the ISS twice.

It means the third mission of Peggy - Expedition 50 will now go on for close to 10 months. Kimbrough conducted four spacewalks totaling more than 26 hours.

Back on Earth, Kimbrough, Ryzhikov and Borisenko will be flown to Karaganda for a traditional ceremony, before the cosmonauts depart for Star City, outside of Moscow, and a NASA jet returns Kimbrough to Houston and the Johnson Space Center.
