Astros try to get offense going vs. Royals

Jason Vargas made three starts last season his first following Tommy John surgery in 2015. David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

This series against the Astros has been a completely different story, and Game 2 showed just how lethal this offense can be, as they scored six runs in the seventh inning. That didn't prevent the Royals (2-3) from trading for Karns in the offseason, and this spring he went 3-2 with a 3.91 ERA over six starts. Raul Mondesi Jr. pinch ran for Moose, and then Alex Gordon provided another clutch hit (he had the big hit on Friday night as well) to score both of those runners. But he received little run support, departed with a 2-1 lead, and watched from the dugout as the Royals rallied for six runs in the eighth inning off reliever Luke Gregerson.

Salvador Perez hit a solo homer in the second inning, turning on Mike Fiers' 89 miles per hour fastball and lining a shot onto the train tracks behind the left-field foul pole. Kansas City won Game 5 to advance and went on to win the World Series. Well, because it's more fun than watching the Royals score one run.

The Astros finally began to crack Vargas in the seventh when Carlos Correa led off with a single and Carlos Beltran brought him home with a double to deep right-center.

Royals manager Ned Yost got all the confirmation he needed on Kansas City right-hander Nate Karns during spring training, enough to express an unwavering confidence in Karns as he prepares to make his first start on Sunday.

Keuchel allowed one run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts in seven innings and was fabulous defensively despite his first error since September 11, 2015.

BREWERS 2, CUBS 1 (11) Ryan Braun scored from third base on a wild pitch in the 11th inning to give Milwaukee a victory over Chicago.

Astros: Collin McHugh, who started the season on the 10-day disabled list after dealing with what he called "dead arm" this spring, will not throw for the next six weeks after injuring his pitching elbow during a rehab start on Thursday.

Keuchel followed with a two-base throwing error that allowed Paulo Orlando to reach second with no outs.

Fantasy Impact Moustakas is having a good start of the season.

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy, right, walks off the mound as Houston Astros' Brian McCann rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run during the third inning of a baseball game, Saturday, April 8, 2017, in Houston. Karns allowed four runs, two hits and two walks in a relief appearance in a 9-1 loss to Minnesota on Wednesday.
