Trump, Xi meet again - in shadow of missile strikes on Syria

Chinese President Xi Jinping advocated for trade and investment cooperation between the USA and China during his visit with President Trump, Reuters reports.

The U.S. attack on Syrian government installations largely overshadowed what was expected to be a high-profile summit at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles as well the U.S.

Both sides are recalibrating after Trump ordered a missile strike on Syria to punish Bashar Assad's regime for a chemical weapons attack.

China has sided with Russian Federation at the United Nations in opposing condemnation of Assad's government but has not become directly involved in the conflict.

The U.S. announced the missile barrage shortly after Trump and Xi wrapped up dinner Thursday.

North Korea is working to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States.

"But I can see that, I think long-term, we are going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it".

Trump also said he and President Xi had developed a personal friendship, and hoped the two leaders can help promote the development of bilateral ties, together. "I think what you are going to see is that the president makes very clear to Xi and publicly what we expect on trade", a U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

She said China always opposes the use of chemical weapons by any country, denouncing chemical attacks in Syria on Tuesday in which 70 people were killed and scores injured, a lot of them civilians in Syrias northwestern Idlib province. US First Lady Melania Trump wore a red dress; while the Chinese first lady was dressed in a bluish, pattern dress.

The dinner included steak and potatoes while among the desserts were chocolate cakes with vanilla sauce and dark chocolate sorbet or a sorbet trio. Among the desserts were chocolate cakes with vanilla sauce and dark chocolate sorbet or a sorbet trio. It will see the country's top leadership ranks decided, and it's the first such meeting since 2012.

Trump wants China to act more on North Korea and its nuclear ambitions. The U.S. president has apparently accepted the invitation and would visit the Asian country later this year. Trump said before the dinner that he had a long discussion with the China president, but he said he got "absolutely nothing" yet.

The Chinese downplayed the timing of the strike, as the foreign ministry in Beijing released a statement saying only that all parties in Syria should find a political settlement.

Trump quipped that he had "gotten nothing" in the first round talks with Xi, with more meetings scheduled on Friday (local time). China is North Korea's most important ally and trading partner.

"President Trump noted the challenges caused by Chinese government intervention in its economy and raised serious concerns", Tillerson said.

Chinese state media on Saturday cheered the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping as one that showed the world that confrontation between the two powers was not inevitable. While there was a minor improvement in the relation between the two countries, there were strong disagreements on issues like human rights and maritime security. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the U.S. trade deficit fell sharply in February as imports from China fell by a record amount and American exports rose for a third straight month, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday. Last year, two-way trade reached Dollars 519.6 billion, compared to USD 2.5 billion in 1979.

The Chinese president focused on trade and investment earlier on Thursday.
