Spieth stumbles in Augusta's water again

Cheers rose from the thick gallery, with the front rows actually standing in a welcoming tribute.

Jordan Spieth made a quadruple-bogey 9 on the par-5 15th in the first round of the 2017 Masters on Thursday, in his first round after making a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 12th in the final round a year ago.

The 15th is a hard hole, and it's played as such on Thursday.

He tried to act normal, but couldn't hide a slight smile of relief. "When you get a little higher up on the higher greens on the course, you can get those gusts and see the ball moving a little bit". "I guess everybody else felt that maybe more than I did". Asked how important that tee shot was, he downplayed the premise.

"I still can't believe I'm here and next thing you know I'm behind the ceremonial tee shot", Henley said.

Entering the par-5 eighth hole on Friday, where he tapped in for birdie after a 28-yard chip, Spieth had been 10 over par in his last 75 Masters holes, dating to that first double bogey in last year's second round.

Jordan Spieth had been here in body for the last four rounds spanning two Masters, but clearly he had been missing an essential component, his aura, Masters Jordan.

Instead, nearly the instant he made contact, Spieth began walking toward the hole, watching his putt stop five feet short.

McGirt qualified for the Masters by winning Nicklaus's signature tour event, the Memorial, at Muirfield in OH previous year. "But do it through patience and taking advantage of the par 5s".

At the 18th hole, Spieth's approach landed in the lap of a woman sitting a few rows behind the green.

Anything short is either in the front left bunker, straight into the water or is likely to roll down the steep bank guarding the green on the right side and trickle into the water. Spieth went all of 20 holes at Augusta between quadruple-bogeys. He strokes his second straight awful mid-range putt, again starting to walk right after impact.

The second shot is downhill to a green guarded by a pond on the left. "I still thought of it as a birdie hole [Thursday], and it really isn't when you lay up". As for the rest of the hole, he avoided the details with both haste and euphemism.

"I'm not going to wish anything bad on anybody", Henley said, "but I'm really happy being under par".

Spieth took a drop on the nearby 13th fairway and pitched back into the water.

Spieth shot a 3-over-par 75.

But Thursday's major lapse suggests the old immune system that used to inoculate Spieth against such errors is weakening. Then came the 15th, perhaps the most scary risk/reward hole in the sport.

And one section of the back nine in particular has earned a reputation for ending dreams of putting on the green jacket. Then he scraped a par out of the trees on 17 after a pushed drive. It looks something like single digits might win this tournament. "Because I was thinking even par for the two days (in tough conditions) was a good score".

Spieth is right, especially if he returns to being the guy who doesn't beat himself.
