Jay-Z's Music Has Finally Been Removed from Spotify and Apple Music

Chart showing NZ recorded music industry revenue by sector

There hasn't been an official announcement from the artist as to why his catalog was pulled, but Spotify did clarify that it was done so at the artist's request.

It looks like Tidal co-owner Jay Z doesn't think Apple Music and Spotify are cool any more because he pulled his albums from the streaming music services. Surprisingly most of Jay Z's catalog is available on Google Play Music, with Reasonable Doubt, and the the Blueprint series as the glaring omissions.

Jay-Z, a.k.a. Shawn Carter, is part owner of Tidal, a music streaming service that competes with Apple, Spotify, and Amazon's services. Today, however, a majority of the rapper's music was taken down from Spotify. Apple Music, however, failed to comment on the removal. Last year, his 2001 album "The Blueprint" was also removed from all streaming services other than Tidal.

It isn't clear if this latest move is specifically meant to drive up Tidal subscriptions.

One difference in the services that may have led Jay Z to remove the titles from Spotify and not Apple is Spotify's ad-based freemium tier which pays artists less in royalties than the subscription tier. For practical purposes, that means the only real difference between Tidal and Apple Music and Spotify are exclusive streaming deals.
