A slice for the stranded: Delta buys pizza for passengers

"Look, we all understand that bad weather happens".

Some 60 percent of all Delta planes use Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on a daily basis and the severe storms that began on Wednesday grounded many flights and stranded thousands of passengers.

There are few things that can make flight delays more bearable, but free pizza is definitely one of them. The carrier had 161 days in 2016 without a cancellation on its mainline operations.

In fact, there's little that airlines are required to do in cases of delays caused by weather or even air traffic control issues.

The airline has faced high-profile disruptions recently.

Delta tells the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the pies were delivered to airports in Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana, Ohio, and Kentucky who had the majority of weather-related cancelations. The airline also offered to waive change fees for those who rebooked their plans.

Several factors aggravated the air-travel headaches.

Spring break travelers packing planes compounded an already difficult situation, making it hard to find available seats for delayed travelers and causing a pile-up in airports and telephone queues.

In 2015, Delta handed out free pizza to Atlanta-bound passengers who were diverted to SC due to stormy weather. "Some elected not to travel ... and their bags were still in the system". Those cancelations come after about 3,000 flights had already been canceled nationwide this week, leaving passengers desperate to get to their destinations frustrated and exhausted.

"It started around 11:50 a.m. and then the flight was delayed to 3:50 p.m., 4:26 p.m., 5 something and then 7:50 p.m.", Ferguson said.

An airline's flight schedule is typically a logistical ballet of flights, aircraft, pilots, flight attendants and ground crews, each carefully scheduled to interact perfectly as they move on routes around the country and the world.
