Canada supports USA missile strike in Syria: PM

"It is in this vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons".

Global Affairs issued a corresponding statement saying Canada "continues to condemn in the strongest of terms chemical weapons attacks against Syrian civilians" and that Canadian officials have "been in touch" with their US counterparts.

A warplane on Friday bombed the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun, where a chemical attack killed scores of people this week and prompted US missile strikes, a witness in the rebel-held area and a war monitoring group said. Even attractive babies were cruelly murdered in this very barbaric attack.

An editorial in the New York Times, habitually engaged in a war of words with the unpredictable commander-in-chief, said Mr Trump was "right to strike" and "should be commended".

"We feel that the strike itself was proportional, because it was targeted at the facility that delivered this most recent chemical weapons attack", Secretary of State Tillerson told reporters.

After the president spoke, the Department of Defense issued a statement saying that at Trump's order, the Navy launched the airstrikes at 8:40 p.m. Eastern time (about 4:40 a.m. Friday Syria time).

"The strike was a proportional response to Assad's heinous act". Almost four years ago, former president Barack Obama threatened an attack after chemical weapons were used to kill hundreds outside the town of Damascus.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement continued, "Egypt is following with great concern the repercussions and consequences of the chemical weapons attack on the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun, which led to the death of dozens of innocent Syrian civilians by internationally banned weapons".

Calling the strike a "flagrant aggression", the Syrian Army said it had killed six people and caused extensive damage to the base.

Yury Shvitkin, deputy head of the Russian lower house of parliament's defense committee said that air strikes by the USA on Syrian airfield show Washington is guilty of political double standards.

Syrian state TV reported the attack on a number of military targets and called the attack an "aggression". John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin believed the US attacks on Syria showed aggression against a sovereign state.

"It's vital that the United States is now clear about its intentions and that the whole worldwide community works towards a political settlement in Syria".

Armed Services Committee chairman, Senator John McCain, who has long called for more aggressive action against Assad, said "the signal I think that was sent last night. was a very, very important one".

President Trump's predecessor Barack Obama had threatened to attack Assad's forces for previous chemical weapons attacks, but never went ahead. "The President must get Congressional approval before attacking Syria-big mistake if he does not!"
