Rahm says Seve looking out for him at Masters

Rahm inspired by Ballesteros on Masters debut

Two-time champion, Seve Ballesteros would have turned 60 on this coming Sunday at the 2017 Masters.

"Seve is my ultimate idol and the name Seve Ballesteros is really important to me", Rahm told reporters on Monday.

Though playing his first Masters in only his second year as a professional, Rahm, ranked 12th in the world, is billed as a potential future world number one and one of the genuine contenders to win the 81st Masters. "But hopefully on Sunday he can make a special present". There's not many places in the world where golf is respected the way it is here. One has to go back to 1979 for the last debutante to wear the green jacket when American Fuzzy Zoeller won the Masters.

No surprise there. Rahm has always been a quick study when it comes to golf, even as a youngster growing up in tiny Barrika, Spain.

Rahm won at Torrey Pines in January in his first appearance at the event and felt he could follow up at Augusta.

"Physically I'm still doing well", he said. "But I'll try to learn as fast as possible". Obviously this is different.

He seems to be relishing his new found status in the game and his stock is very much on the rise following an impressive top-five finish at Bay Hill but he has been priced up accordingly and I will leave him out on this occasion. "I don't see any reason why he can't go and play well or be in contention this week and have a chance to win", said Fowler, who in 2011 was five shots out of the 36-hole lead and eventually finished T38 in his Masters debut.

"I didn't want to be at home practicing, over-thinking it, just being anxious to be here", he said. I might do it.

At 6-ft-2 (1.88m) and 220 lbs (100kg), Rahm belongs to an emerging breed of big, fit power hitters but has a complete game reminiscent of Tiger Woods in his pomp.

Then he followed that with three top--5 finishes, including almost chasing down victor and world No. 1 Dustin Johnson in the WGC Dell Match Play final two weeks ago.

But he had to come back in the match after messing up the first nine holes because he failed to master his nerves.

Rahm's achievements could eventually be off the charts but it is still very early days in his Masters career and I think he will have to be bang on the money to reward favourite backers against Garcia. "I know the first tee shot I'm going to be really, really pumped up, so I don't know how it's going to go", he said. But I was like, 'OK, he's just trying to be nice, right?

"I learned that if I have a good day I can take on the number one player in the world", Rahm said.
