Uber suspends self-driving car program in 2 states

The accident, in which no one was seriously injured, occurred Friday in Tempe, a city in Arizona, Uber said.

The Volvo SUV was moving in autonomous mode when the accident happened.

"We are continuing to look into this incident and can confirm we had no backseat passengers in the vehicle", the Uber spokesperson said.

Uber has suspended tests of its self-driving cars after one of them flipped over following a collision in Tempe, Arizona. The cars collided while at high speed and the Uber s vehicle flipping onto its side. As a precaution, the vehicles have a safety engineer who can take control if necessary.

Uber's temporary grounding of its autonomous fleet was applauded by Audrey Russo of the Pittsburgh Technology Council. Most of the accidents were minor and weren't caused by Waymo's vehicles. However, nobody knows at the moment whether or not they were manually controlling the vehicle or if it was driving on its own.

The crash comes as Uber grapples with a wide range of crises.

Waymo, Google's autonomous auto division, recently filed a lawsuit against Uber-owned Otto for stealing trade secrets and intellectual property. The outcome of that legal fight could affect Uber's future significantly. The other auto - the human-piloted vehicle - is deeply dented.

But that future is still far off. Humans are awful at driving, but other humans know this and adjust our driving to account for what regular people would do on the road. That will put autonomous vehicles in situations that may seem simple but are actually hard to navigate, such as what to do when another vehicle honks its horn. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute released a study in 2016 that placed self-driving auto crash rates far below the national average.

In May 2016, a Tesla driver was killed in an accident while the auto was operating in its semi-autonomous Autopilot mode.

The nonpartisan, nonprofit public interest group also called on Uber to release all video and technical details related to the Friday crash.

Independent cars are in full development in the United States.

It's not the first time the company's trial of self-driving vehicles has been in the news due to safety concerns. They weren't able to stop the collision, their vehicle ended up on its side.

Uber Technologies has decided it will suspend its trials with self-driving vehicles, after one of its Volvo's crashed in Arizona this weekend, reports Bloomerg.
