UN Security Council to meet tomorrow on Syria gas attack

Since the civil war began in 2011, an estimated 400,000 Syrians have been killed, according to figures issued by the United Nations past year. Rebels and opposition officials have expressed concerns that the government is planning to mount a concentrated attack on the crowded province.

The news from Idlib Tuesday came as an worldwide conference opened in Brussels Tuesday to discuss the future of Syria. He said he lives in the center of the town and the attack took place in the northern part.

The tweet was in reference to a 2013 chemical attack on the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, which was blamed on the Syrian regime and prompted President Barack Obama to threaten military action at the time.

Syria's leading opposition group, the National Coalition, accused the "regime of the criminal Bashar" of being behind the attack.

The United States is president of the 15-member council for April. The initial strike was followed by rocket attacks on clinics treating the wounded.

But the senior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the rebels were the ones using the toxic gas against civilians to frame the Syrian army.

Tarik Jasarevic, spokesman for the World Health Organisation in Geneva, said in a statement that the agency is contacting health providers from Idlib to get more information about Tuesday's incident.

At least 11 children were among the dead, the Observatory said, and an AFP correspondent in Khan Sheikhun saw many attached to respirators as they were treated for breathing problems. It caused many people to choke, and some to foam at the mouth.

Jets also struck the town of Salqin in the north of Idlib province on Tuesday, killing eight people, the monitor said.

Most of the town's streets had become empty, a witness said. Opposition activists published videos of purported victims, including one showing nine lifeless children.

In Washington, the White House condemned what it called a "reprehensible" and "intolerable" chemical attack in Syria Tuesday and pinned the blame squarely on Bashar al-Assad's government. That attack, which a United Nations report said used sarin gas, was the worst in Syria's civil war. In case it was not already painfully obvious: the notion that the Syrian people would be able to decide the fate of Assad or the future of their country under these conditions is an absurd fiction.

She said the attack "is a dramatic reminder of the fact that the first priority is, as in any conflict, stopping the fighting".

The attack has been called a war crime.

August 7, 2015: The U.N. Security Council authorizes the OPCW and U.N. investigators to probe reports of chemical weapons use in Syria, as reports circulate of repeated chlorine gas attacks by government forces against civilians in opposition-held areas.

An investigation by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) found Syrian government forces were responsible for three chlorine gas attacks in 2014 and 2015 and that Islamic State militants had used mustard gas.

Russia, backed by China, cast its seventh veto to protect the Syrian authorities and Russian President Vladimir Putin described the draft resolution as "totally inappropriate".

Following the 2013 attack, Syria joined the worldwide Chemical Weapons Convention under a US-Russian deal, averting the threat of US-led military intervention.
