Boeing: First major deal with Tehran since Trump took office

Boeing Co. says it signed new $3B deal with Iranian airline

The tentative agreement commits Boeing to delivering 30 of its 737 MAX airplanes starting in 2022 and gives the Iranian airline the option of acquiring 30 additional planes. If the White House thwarts Boeing's dealmaking, it also risks tilting the playing field in favor of Europe's Airbus Group SE just as global jet sales are slowing, said aerospace consultant Richard Aboulafia. "To a certain extent they are imposing a level of conflict on Republicans because they are going to have to balance manufacturing jobs to export markets with getting tough on Iran".

Aseman is owned by Iran's civil service pension fund and operates as a private company.

Aseman spokesman Amir Reza Mostafavi told The Associated Press that the deal came following several round of talks over the past year between the airline and Boeing.

The European Union blacklisted Aseman from European skies in December because of safety concerns. More deliveries are expected to take place over the next months.

The latest deal comes as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's government seeks to highlight improvements resulting from the nuclear deal in the run-up to May presidential elections. IranAir struck a $16.6 billion deal with the company in December for 80 planes.

Boeing must now apply for licenses from the U.S. Treasury allowing it to proceed with the sale.

Rouhani is likely to run a campaign highlighting economic benefits of the nuclear deal, which opened Iran to foreign investment. However, Western analysts are skeptical that there is demand for so many jets or available financing for deals worth billions of dollars. By contrast, US auto makers Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. have steered clear.

Boeing said it negotiated the agreement under government authorizations.

President Trump has said he opposes the cancellation of Iranian nuclear sanctions.

The deal was concluded on Tuesday in Tehran, the report said.
