We Happy Few signs a movie deal, says Variety

We Happy Few Film

Though it's still only in early access, dystopian survival title We Happy Few is already the subject of some big film plans.

Variety reports developer Compulsion Games has partnered with Pitch Perfect producer Gold Circle Entertainment and the producer of the recently-announced Sleeping Dogs movie, dj2 Entertainment, on the project.

Guillaume Provost, head of the game's developer, Compulsion Games, says, "Dmitri, Stephan and Dan approached us enthusiastically and with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film, while retaining its menace, dark humor, and central themes". But that hasn't stopped the developers at Compulsion Games from making a movie deal.

Gold Circle and dj2 are now out to writers for the project.

The game is set in a "drug-fueled, retrofuturistic" English town in an alternate 1960s at a time where the government has set up a drug-induced happiness for its residents to hide the truth.

Dj2 CEO Dmitri Johnson also states that the studio's goal is to remain true to the game's source material. It is also co-producing a Sonic the Hedgehog motion picture. The story revolves around one rebellious resident illegally free of the drug's effects, who risks his life to learn why his home is a freakish open-air prison.

If you're interested in getting more into We Happy Few, the game is available on the Xbox One Game Preview Program and Steam for $29.99.
