Mississippi St. shocks UConn at buzzer

Mississippi State guard Morgan William drove to the basket against UConn

DALLAS (AP) - When the final shot beat the buzzer and UConn's record streak was over, Geno Auriemma had to smile.

In possibly the biggest upset in women's basketball history, Mississippi State ended UConn's 111-game winning streak with an overtime buzzer beater Friday night, The Associated Press reported.

"I can't say I'm surprised", Auriemma said.

Player of the game II: Victoria Vivians. I've been talking about it all year. "We didn't have the kind of maturity that you need to win at this level at this time of the year", he said.

"We didn't have it. A big part of that was because of what they were doing". Winning had become routine, often by routs.

Speaking of the Cowboys, even Dez Bryant was up late watching the game.

But the Bulldogs would not go away. "For us to come off beating a great team, and not finishing it off, it'd be tough", Williams said. "They just, they did an excellent job", Williams said. The games are sold out and UConn has been the center of media, just as they have all season. I'm still in shock. I got in the space, I jumped up, I made the shot. They were sound and they made good shots.

The Bulldogs (34-4) will play SC (32-4) for the national championship Sunday night in a matchup of Southeastern Conference teams. All season long, the Bulldogs had that humiliating loss on their minds.

UConn has won the national championship the last four years. I can't thank them enough because I can't be playing the way I'm playing without them. "It's personal", Coach Vic Schaefer had told them.

One of the many great lines floating around Twitter this morning is that Mississippi State now will have to play Finland to win the gold medal, an excellent reference to the "Miracle on Ice" U.S. hockey team in 1980.

Mississippi State had a chance to win at the end of regulation, but Lady Bulldogs guard Morgan William passed up a wide-open three-pointer for a drive to the basket that was smothered by Connecticut's Gabby Williams. We just had to go out there and play.

Stunningly, after a 111-game winning streak, the Huskies had trouble leading Mississippi State, much less pulling ahead.

Before the Bulldogs and Gamecocks tip off Sunday's title game (ESPN/WatchESPN, 6 p.m. ET), our staff looks at what might most affect the matchup and predicts which team will win.

When Missippi State completed the almost impossible and beat UConn 66-64 on Friday night off of a buzzer beating jump shot from Morgan Williams, fans around the country celebrated.

This game will have ripples for years to come.

Guard Saniya Chong sparked the Huskies by scoring seven during a 12-0 run to close the gap. Mississippi State held UConn to just 11 assists.

The Huskies opened the second half with a 10-3 run to get within 39-38 with 7 minutes left in the third quarter.

And after that one, both Schaefer and South Carolina's Dawn Staley talked about the possibility of meeting again in the Final Four.

SC defeated the Bulldogs in their only regular season game, 64-61, in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks prevailed again with a 59-49 victory over Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament championship game in early March. The Cardinal led early, but struggled after star Karlie Samuelson sprained her ankle.

They were clearly a different, more hardened and mature team, led by the magnificent William, whose 41 points against Baylor had gotten them to the Final Four in the first place. "But we knew it could happen. But just the feeling of just making history at your school is just something really special".

"Across the nation, the ratings may not be as high as if it was UConn and SC". She led the team with 21 points and kept the Huskies in it throughout.

With very little time remaining, William hit the shot and slung the rock with knocked down Goliath.

"We all know that there are probably things that we would like to change throughout that game, but that second half, I am really proud of the way our team fought. Psychologically and physically, it was a challenge".
