Emmert: NCAA will decide next week whether to return to NC

'Bathroom bill' could cost North Carolina more NCAA events

Thursday North Carolina lawmakers passed a bill that repeals the state's bathroom law in a move meant to end a year of protests by gay activists and leftists boycotting buisnesses and big events, like the NCAA, refusing to schedule in the state. The new law drew intense opposition from civil rights advocates because it bans local governments from passing measures to protect LGBT people.

North Carolina's legislature on Thursday passed a statute that modifies the highly controversial HB2 law, better known as the "bathroom bill".

Cooper acknowledges that it's not a ideal deal and stops short of many things the state needs to do.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Basketball-mad North Carolina is bracing for what could be another costly hit from its "bathroom bill" as the NCAA selects four years of championship sites for a variety of sports.

The bill is a compromise agreed to Wednesday by Cooper, and two of the state's Republican legislators, was approved by the House and Senate after contentious debate.

The stakes are high: The Associated Press calculated that North Carolina made $71.4 million from 28 neutral-site NCAA events in the five academic years ending last spring.

While the National Basketball Association has yet to comment on the state's decision, NCAA President Mark Emmert told reporters Thursday that the organization's board will now vote on whether to reconsider North Carolina.

He told reporters at a news conference that the NCAA Board of Governors will hold discussions to determine whether the new legislation "is a sufficient change in the law for the board to feel comfortable going back to North Carolina".

While all indications are the NCAA and ACC looked favorably upon the compromise, neither NCAA President Mark Emmert nor ACC Commissioner John Swofford was willing to come out and say that Thursday.

Emmert said the NCAA board will meet and make a decision sometime next week on if North Carolina can be in the running for 2018-2022 championships. Several lawmakers said there was a new proposal floated by Republicans.

The repeal gets rid of the most talked about part of the state's "bathroom bill": the requirement that people use the restroom matching the gender marked on their birth certificate. Pat McCrory, R, signed into law, the infamous House Bill 2.

HB2 nullified Charlotte's expanded nondiscrimination ordinance that extended legal protection for gay, lesbian and transgender individuals.

That criticism cast doubt on whether boycotting businesses will return to the state.

The HB2 bill has cost the state millions of dollars since being signed into law.

Did repeal of the law go far enough?

Cooper was elected in November on a platform that called for repeal of HB2, which was enacted under the man he defeated, Republican Gov.

"If we could have props in here, I'd take a basketball covered in money and roll it down the middle aisle there." said Republican Rep. Carl Ford.

SHAPIRO: As we heard, the governor says that this begins to fix the state's reputation. The site selection committees began meeting this week and are scheduled to announce their decisions on April 18. Donald Trump won North Carolina comfortably.

"I think this is a great way for us to reset but we have to remember that all people regardless of lifestyle, they're entitled to happiness, and love and respect and safety", he said.
