Schiff: The White House Letter Raised More Questions Than Answers

Michael Flynn is Donald Trump's national security adviser

The New Yorker has presented what it perceives as increasing evidence House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes colluded with the White House to stop the investigation into Russian interference into last year's US election.

Nunes went on to tell reporters that the president was surveilled in some capacity.

"We have invited them up to view it in a classified setting", he said, referring to the Republican chairs and Democratic ranking members of the Senate and House intelligence committees.

Citing unnamed USA officials, the Times identified the White House official as "Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence at the National Security Council".

But it's unclear if the documents Rep.

Nunes told Bloomberg earlier this week that his source was an intelligence official, not a White House staffer.

Schiff said he has accepted the invitation from the White House Counsel, but said the invitation "raises more questions than it answers".

Behind the occasionally freakish details, however, lie major foreign policy disputes within the USA ruling elite, with powerful forces, particularly in the military-intelligence apparatus, opposed to Trump's apparently softer line on Russia-or at least, his shift towards confronting China and Iran first, rather than continuing with the Obama policy of confronting Russian Federation in the Middle East, Ukraine and the Baltic states.

In his response, the Democrat said that the full committee should be able to see the materials.

The California Democrat said he had a "great sense of nostalgia" seeing Senate intelligence committee leaders holding a news conference together on Wednesday, saying that he had that relationship with Nunes up until last week.

It is unclear if they are the same as those viewed by Nunes. He's become a controversial figure in intelligence circles, but Trump made a decision to keep him on over the objections of the CIA, according to the officials. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly by name. The witnesses will include Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and a top White House adviser, who met with both the Russian ambassador and a top Russian banker during the transition period.

Nunes has repeatedly sidestepped questions about who provided him the intelligence reports, though he pointedly has not denied that he sources were in the White House.

"We had staff-to-staff discussions with their congressional affairs people", Nunes spokesman Jack Langer said.
