'Angel of Death' serial killer dies after attack in Ohio prison

A former hospital orderly dubbed the "Angel of Death", who said he killed more than 50 people while insisting he only meant to end their suffering, died Thursday after an attack in an OH prison, PEOPLE confirms.

A prisons spokeswoman says 64-year-old Donald Harvey died Thursday, two days after state troopers say he was found beaten at the state's prison in Toledo.

A prison spokesperson confirmed to The Huffington Post that his death was under investigation by The Ohio State Highway Patrol, whose special response team handles prison incidents.

"Donald Harvey decided as the "Angel of Death" he had the right to decide who lives and who dies, and it was wrong, and he knew it, and he was a murderer", Nadel said.

His victims were claimed while he was at Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky; the Cincinnati VA Medical Hospital; and Cincinnati's Drake Memorial Hospital.

Harvey escaped the death penalty by accepting the plea bargain agreement.

According to a patrol report cited by the AP, Harvey was in his cell when an unidentified person attacked him Tuesday afternoon.

Harvey had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of his uncle and a neighbor between the ages of four and 20, and was raped by his male roommate in 1970, when he was 18. Details of his injuries were not disclosed, nor was the identity of the fellow prisoner who attacked him. "They just pronounce him dead and send him straight to his funeral home". A serial killer known as the "Angel of Death" after he admitted killing three dozen hospital patients in Ohi. Others he suffocated by letting their oxygen tanks go empty.

Harvey claimed variously that he was a mercy killer putting dying patients out of their misery and also that he enjoyed the power of controlling who got to live and die on his wards. He was finally caught when a coroner smelt cyanide on one of his victims.

Harvey is now serving 15 life sentences and will be first eligible for parole when he's 91 years old.
