Woman strikes Capitol Police cruiser, taken into custody

A female driver was arrested Wednesday morning after reportedly hitting a police cruiser and almost running over police officers at the USA capitol.

One year ago, a Capitol Police officer shot and injured a man who brought a weapon into the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.

They ordered her to stop, but the driver made a U-turn and fled, hitting a police cruiser in the process, Malecki said. At one point Capitol Police fired shots, but no one was hit.

The woman was stopped in her vehicle at Washington and Independence avenues and a short foot chase followed before she was taken into custody.

The Washington Post reported that the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. local time outside the Rayburn building on the Capitol grounds. She charged with seven counts of assault on a police officer, two counts of destruction of property, fleeing, leaving the scene of a collision and not having a valid permit, Malecki said.

Additionally, Malecki stated that "although preliminary, this incident appears to be criminal in nature with no nexus to terrorism".

Additional information on what prompted officers to fire was not released immediately.

Capitol Police sent out an email alert about the incident, asking Hill staffers to stay clear of the area. The woman, who was not shot, was later taken into custody.

Capitol Police are investigating the incident, she said.

The Capitol building remains open except for cuts to traffic on Independence Avenue. Her young daughter was inside the auto at the time and was unharmed.

The U.S. Secret Service, which protects the president, his family and other top officials and visiting dignitaries, said that officers had established a perimeter, and moved pedestrians outside the White House a safe distance away, as a precaution.
