Oklahoma officer critically hurt in traffic-stop shooting

Tecumseh police officer critically shot overnight after traffic stop, exchange of gunfire

A 22-year-old police officer has died after a shootout with a man who fled a traffic stop in central Oklahoma, police said Monday.

According to police, Officer Justin Terney pulled over a vehicle at about 11:30 p.m.in Tecumseh, 35 miles southeast of Oklahoma City.

After a Taser failed to stop the man, police told KOCO5 Terney and the suspect exchanged gunfire; both were hit. Police say the suspected shooter was also wounded and taken to a hospital. "But unfortunately, they were not able to get some of the bleeding to stop", said J.R. Kidney, Assistant Chief of Tecumseh Police.

Patch will update this report.

"We are deeply saddened at the tragic loss of Officer Terney, who was senselessly shot to death late last night", a spokesman for the department said, according to the Daily Mail. "We need everybody to rally around and support us".

Terney began to pursue the man on foot, after which the suspect shot Terney three times in the stomach.

The suspect underwent surgery and remains in the ICU where his condition is unknown.

Tecumseh police say the officer is in critical condition Monday morning at OU Medical Center.

'Just know we are proud of you for all you have done!' Cecily Kidd wrote.

The Oklahoma Blood Institute reached out to KFOR Monday, saying many donors have expressed interest in donating blood in honor of Terney. 'You accomplished great things and no one will ever forget you.

Dillon Degraffenreid added that, 'Heaven better of had a batch of no bake cookies and some chocolate milk waiting!'
