Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will lead search for new Georgetown coach

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

Ewing, like Chris Mullin at St. John's, would need to load up on high-caliber assistant coaches to help him bridge the gap from assisting in the National Basketball Association to head coaching at the college level.

"It is with profound regret and deep appreciation that I informed John Thompson III this morning that the University will no longer be retaining his services", Georgetown president John J. DeGioia said in a statement.

Put together with previous stops at Seton Hall and MI and Amaker has run a big-time program while also winning at an Ivy League school.

Their attendance has slipped in recent years, they couldn't announce their own head coach at home games at the Verizon Center in 2016-17 and after losing to Arkansas State in an on-campus home game, the student body chanted "Fire JT3". Thompson III's last appearance in the tournament came in 2015, when they lost to Utah in the Round of 32.

Having been an assistant or associate coach with some of the most respected coaches in recent National Basketball Association history, Ewing has quite the resume already.

Since that lone Final Four appearance a decade ago, the Hoyas had several missteps at the Big Dance, going 3-6 and never winning more than one game in any single bracket.

Ewing's obviously a huge name, especially in the Washington, D.C. area, and his coaching resume is improving by the year.

This wouldn't just be a Chris Mullin at St. John's type of scenario where Mullin had no coaching experience before taking the job. He has been a candidate for head coaching jobs in the National Basketball Association, with Wojnarowski reporting he was close to getting the Sacramento Kings job past year. Georgetown represents an unique opportunity for Ewing to rebuild his former program and his son, Patrick Ewing Jr., would potentially work for him.

Georgetown fired John Thompson III this week after 13 seasons.

The next season, Georgetown fell prey to Steph Curry's March Madness run with Davidson and hasn't made it past the tournament's first weekend since.

In addition to finishing the season 14-18 (5-13 in the Big East), Georgetown hasn't been able to hang on to players. But now that Smart has at least four, four-star prospects entering Texas next season, while returning most of the current roster, he has a chance to build from this season's last-place finish. When Georgetown takes the court for the start of the 2017-18 season, that will no longer be the case.
