Gas prices dropping, but motorists aren't seeing much savings

Gas prices continue to climb

The average price of a gallon of gas in cities around the state includes $2.09 in Charlottesville, $2.03 in the Norfolk area, $2.07 in Richmond and $2.16 in Roanoke.

AAA Michigan says gas prices statewide have risen by about 1 cent per gallon in the past week. Ohio's prices rose 7.4 cents per gallon from the previous week.

Local prices for regular unleaded averaged $2.208 per gallon on Monday, down 1.3 cents over the week, according to data from AAA.

The Florida average was $2.262, down from $2.274 a week ago.

AAA, which last week predicted a drop of five to 10 cents before the seasonal climb begins, still sees a further decline. In Oakland, prices are averaging $3 while in San Jose drivers are paying an average of $3.03.

But U.S. domestic production - ramped up after prices topped $50 late past year - continues to increase, with 14 drilling rigs brought online last week, AAA said. "Although it could take several weeks, analysts believe oil prices could recover by the time OPEC meets again in May". "For now, there's a minor tug of war going on with oil prices - a move higher or lower in the week ahead could determine the direction of prices the next weeks or longer".

"We anticipate that, even through the early summer months, we anticipate gas being in the range of $2.50 or $2.60 at the most", Bubar said.
