Brazil tries to contain damage from meat scandal

Top meat-packers have been accused of selling rotten produce for years.

The Brazilian police operation codenamed "Weak Flesh" was likely to deal a heavy blow to one of the few sectors of Latin America's largest economy that has thrived during a two-year recession.

President Michel Temer has guaranteed Brazilian society and the ambassadors of 20 countries that buy the country's meat that those products are healthy and that the criminals that had been adulterating them had been stopped. Of more than 4700 federal-inspected meat plants, the investigations focussed on just 21.

In some cases, carcinogenic chemicals had been used to mask the smell of the meat, authorities confirmed.

Adding that he believes that beef is the only meat affected by the Brazilian scandal, Mr Chung said consumers here should not worry since the quantity of beef consumed in Singapore is small, compared to other meats.

JBS, the biggest meat processer in the world, said in a filing that none of its executives were singled out in the investigation and that its headquarters were not targeted.

These inspectors would then issue the proper certificates regardless of the condition of the meat.

The companies involved in the scandal would be temporarily barred, said European Union spokesman Enrico Brivio, speaking to reporters in Brasilia, the capital.

"In the IFA policy document on Brexit we have set out very clearly the need for equivalent standards on food safety, animal health, welfare and the environment and the need for the application of the common external tariff for imports to both the European Union and United Kingdom", he said. Both companies have denied wrongdoing. "We have complete confidence in our approach to food safety and product quality in Brazil, and in all of our operations around the world".

In the wake of a food scandal in Brazil in which 33 government officials have so far been suspended, Denmark's Veterinary and Food Administration has reported to TV2 News that they are investigating whether any of the contaminated meat has ended up here.

"We will take action to punish those who committed this", he said.
