Gennady Golovkin unifies middleweight titles with decision over Daniel Jacobs

Golovkin v Jacobs TV channel undercard fight time and odds

Hand speed and footwork were Jacobs' salvation as he managed to fight through fatigue and pull Golovkin into uncharted waters: the 12th round. This wasn't a case of Golovkin taking an easy challenger to stay in shape for the big fight later this year.

It certainly wasn't easy, but Gennady Golovkin will take it.

In a tense fight, an out-of-sorts Golovkin struggled to figure out the busy Jacobs, who thought he had done enough to win the fight. He deserved far more respect and in defeat that is exactly what he got.

Known for his knockout power, Golovkin's knockout streak of 23 came to an end as Jacobs, holder of the WBA's regular belt, pushed him to dig deeper and fight longer than what he's used to in his career.

Golovkin outlasted Jacobs in a superb 12-round defence of his middleweight titles on Saturday night.

If Jacobs gets the win, Golovkin can forget about the pay-day with Canelo he has been chasing and Jacob's should take a bigger step in the public eye as the giant-slayer. "I needed a quality fight, not just the 12 rounds". Srikaset finished the round strong but may have been thinking he still had some work to do in order to win the fight on the cards down the stretch.

Golovkin followed Jacobs in narrow straight lines, lacked his usual edge and seemed frustrated at times. It nearly looked as if Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) would become the monster we had expected when he dropped Jacobs with a right hand in the fourth round.

Gennady Golovkin started to land heavier comobos in the later rounds, with an apparent lead over fellow middleweight champion Danny Jacobs.

Jacobs was more than just a stopgap opponent. This fight was about the realisation of hefty expectation and with Jacobs down and hurt it should have been over.

Golovkin landed the hardest punch of the seventh, a lead right that drove Jacobs backward, but the Brooklyn fighter shook it off and continued to outpunch Golovkin in terms of volume. More importantly Jacobs never panicked, never showed fear. Gennady Golovkin (37-0) faces Daniel Jacobs (32-2) in the main event. "I think I won it by two rounds", Jacobs said.

To the crowd's obvious dismay, Srikaset was given the nod 114-112 on two cards, with a third seeing it 113-113 - a draw. "Of course, I want that fight", he said. Boxing fans and analysts are anticipating a showdown between him and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, which is being planned for September, but both fighters have scheduled bouts before that megafight. All three are massive and hard fights. Golovkin was 170 pounds when he re-weighed, while Jacobs declined.
