Turkish Airlines steps in to help famine-hit Somalia

Here's how Colin Kaepernick is helping with the devastating famine in Somalia

The airline agreed to ship food containers on their commercial aircraft until the end of Somalia's starvation.

A social media campaign aiming at delivering humanitarian aid to famine-hit Somalia through a Turkish Airlines flight has gone viral with backing from celebrities and people across the world.

Jarre had posted his own video (see below) on Wednesday in French with English subtitles, explaining that a volunteer in Somalia had called him to ask for his help, saying they had just been watching a 6-year-old girl dying from dehydration.

Thousands of people, including celebrities, took to social media to urge Turkish Airlines, believed to be the only commercial airline that now flies to Somalia, to fill a plane with aid for hunger stricken Somalia.

'There's an impending starvation because of drought, politics, inaction of (non-government organizations) and lack of media attention. We can all help by continuing to spread awareness of East Africa's dire circumstances. So the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback spoke out on social media. "We can help be the change".

After Turkish Airlines agreed to provide a plane, Kaepernick issued a thank you statement on Twitter. Let's make this happen.

Kaepernick appealed on Thursday over Instagram for any help for Somalia.

Somalia's prime minister announced earlier this month that the deaths of at least 110 people due to hunger and diarrhoea in the country over the past 48 hours. Donate food. Donate water. "And we filled it with food and water and sent it to Somalia?"

They will also allow Love Army For Somalia to ship food containers on commercial aircrafts to the country until the end of the starvation.

The average donation has been around $28 - the largest came from Kaepernick, basketball player Wilson Chandler, and DJ Calvin Harris who all donated $25,000 each - and Casey is now hopeful that their campaign will bring the issues in Somalia "to the forefront", especially at a time when the American government is cutting all humanitarian aid.
