Issa Hayatou loses CAF presidency, Ahmad wins

CAF election: Nigeria's Amaju defeats Benin's Anjorin

Issa Hayatou's 29-year reign as African football president ended on Thursday when African football leaders voted for Ahmad Ahmad the Madagascan as the new CAF president.

The result was considered a surprise due to how long Hayatou had been in power but the head of the Madgascar Football Association had been gaining support throughout the continent in the build up to the historic vote.

Pinnick won the West African Zone B seat into the Caf executive committee by defeating Benin Republic's Anjorin Moucharafou.

Zanzibar has been admitted as a full member of the Confederation of African Football and will be able to play in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino was seen as a stronginfluence as he had made no bones about his support for change.

Ahmad's campaign train arrived Abuja, Nigeria early March where he met with Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung and other stakeholders in the Nigerian football space. "When you work hard for years and months and you succeed, that is great".

The 70-year-old from Cameroon left the congress room when Thursday's result was announced without commenting, led away by the arm by one of his aides.

As at the time of filing this report last night, no less than six members of the Hayatou cabinet had lost their bids to return to the executive.

Ahmad becomes only the seventh Caf president in the body's 60-year history.

"We are very happy that African football has now been liberated", Rwanda soccer federation president Vincent Nzamwita said.

The Nigeria football chief had triggered the Infantino involvement when he brought him to Nigeria alongside African FA chairmen in a move that started the eventual fall of Hayatou.

He had been challenged for the Caf presidency only twice before and both times won with landslide victories. He says he will modernise the body and make it more transparent, although his own transparency has once been questioned.

The NFF boss is the third Nigeria to get to the CAF Council after Etubom Orok Oyo and Dr Amos Adamu were similarly elected in the past.

Hayatou and CAF Secretary General Hicham El Amrani have been accused by Egyptian authorities of breaching anti-monopoly regulations in a $US 1bn marketing and television rights deal.
