How Harry Kane's Injury Changes Tottenham Hotspur's Playing Style

Although nowhere near one another in the table, the story of each sides' season is remarkably similar, with both going into the game off the back of positive results, setting up an intriguing contest.

The striker injured his ankle in the early stages of the FA Cup clash with Millwall at the weekend and there were concerns that he would miss the rest of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane is hopeful that he might only be out of action for three or four weeks.

Because of the global break at the end of the month, Kane might only miss four league matches - against Southampton, Burnley, Swansea and Watford.

"We are very confident in our players and squad, and now it's just trying not to make excuses and trying to perform well and score goals and win games". We are finding our best form now and the team is more solid.

"The data shows that out of the forwards Tottenham have used this season, Kane, Son and [Vincent] Janssen, Kane regains the ball more through the high press, central to Pochettino's choice of playing style", Paul Power, data scientist at STATS, says.

He said: "It was a different period".

Spurs face a similarly uphill task, with Antonio Conte's Blues moving 10 points clear in the race to lift the Premier League.

While Spurs beat City without Kane in October, they failed to win any of their following six matches in his absence.

Spurs with Kane have been in fearsome form this term, sitting in impressive second in the Premier League with 33 points left to play for.

The most troubling statistic though, ahead of Sunday's Premier League showdown with Southampton, is that without Kane, Spurs' average goal count drops significantly from 2.09 per game to 1. We have improved a lot since then.

Tottenham are not alone in their reliance on one player - Kane - for the vast majority of their goals, given the likes of Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero are all similarly dominant at their clubs.

Spurs have won their last two games in the league and haven't lost in over a month, while their visitors have also won back-to-back matches in the division, scoring four times in each. "He's a player we need to be focused on".
