Geno Smith comes to terms with Giants

Geno Smith

After re-signing Josh Johnson, the Giants have reportedly come to terms with former New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith.

Smith, who was selected by the Jets in the second round of the 2013 draft out of West Virginia, became a free agent on March 9, the first day of the new National Football League year. In his last two seasons, the former West Virginia Mountaineer played a total of three games thanks to injury. The quarterback won't get that opportunity with the Giants unless Eli Manning gets hurt, of course.

It makes sense for the Jets and Smith to go their separate ways. Getting punched by then-teammate IK Enemkpali was Smith's most infamous distraction, but it was hardly his only one. With Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg the only arms on the roster, Smith was looking more enticing by the day.

Bringing in backup options behind Eli Manning is a good move for NY.

The Giants had Smith in for a visit over the weekend, and the Johnson signing initially seemed to indicate that door had closed.

Smith finished his tenure with the Jets with a 12-18 record as a starter. Taking a flier on him is arguably a better decision than overspending in what is a lackluster crop of free-agent quarterbacks. It was the worst example yet that Smith hasn't done enough in his first two seasons with the Jets to acquit himself of the criticism.

Oddly enough, Smith's disappointing career started abruptly in part because of the Giants.
