31 migrants killed in attack off Yemen

Saudi King Salman, British Prime Minister Theresa May and Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifah pose for

Two missiles were fired at the mosque, in the Kofal military camp west of Marib, officials said.

The war in Yemen has killed more than 10,000 civilians and displaced over 3 million people.

It is believed that the boat was headed towards Sudan, and the UN Refugee agency has said that the dead Somalis were carrying official UNHCR documents.

The agency didn't say who carried out the strike.

Yemen is hosting over 255,000 Somali refugees.

Volunteers help recover bodies from the boat after the attack. The asylum-seekers were then able to hold up flashlights to show the aircraft that they were migrants. Mohammed was unharmed in the attack.

It was not clear who the helicopter belonged to.

The rebel-controlled Saba agency said the refugees had been attacked from the air by the Saudi-led coalition battling the insurgents, but did not provide further details. There was no immediate coalition comment.

During the past few weeks, the Saudi-led Arab coalition intensified airstrikes on areas along Yemen's Red Sea Coast in an apparent attempt to support Yemeni government forces to kick the Shiite Houthi group out of the port city of Hodyada.

"The attack took place in the Red Sea off Yemen, late Thursday", IOM spokesman Joel Millman told a news conference in Geneva.

He added that they were aware of 80 survivors brought to hospitals in Hodeidah. The spokeswoman for the United Nations refugee agency in Yemen, Shabia Mantoo, confirmed that refugees were killed, but did not cite any specific casualty count.

Yemen's Houthi rebels reported shooting down a Saudi Apache helicopter in Hodeideh province on Thursday. It also said that the dead included women and children.

That claim could not be immediately confirmed.

Yemen has been under an aggression by Saudi-led coalition since March 2015.

African migrants continue to head to Yemen, a transit point to Saudi Arabia where they seek jobs and a better life.
